Shiba Inu

Shiba Inu. It is similar to the Akita breed, but generally much smaller in stature. The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the six original and distinct spitz breeds of dog from Japan. A small, agile dog that copes very well with mountainous terrain, the Shiba Inu was originally bred for hunting.

American Dingo Portrait

When you think about a wild dog, one usually thinks of a breed similar to a wolf. However North America has its very own wild dog called the American Dingo, also known as the Carolina Dog. Dr. I. Lehr Brisbin Jr., discovered this breed in the 1920's living in the most isolated stretches of the southeastern United States.

I have never heard of this breed until I recently was asked to paint a portrait of one. This breed has a tan colored coat and looks slender. With alert eyes this is a very good looking dog.

The Carolina Dogs have an interesting history. They are descendant from the “pariah dogs” which were brought to North America more than 9,000 years ago. These dogs are one of the few breeds that still exist which can be classified as a “primitive” breed, largely unaffected by man or selective breeding. Though these dogs still retain much of their wild nature, they are gentle and devoted companions. With proper training and socialization the Carolina Dog can make a wonderful family pet.

I painted this AmericanDingo in a natural landscape of long grass and a woodsy darker backdrop, which I felt suited the nature of this dog better than a painterly soft backdrop.

Schnoodle Portrait

A Schnoodle is a cross between a schnauzer and a poodle. Schnoodle is a portmanteau combining the two breed names. Gee Gee here has lots of very tight curls and I played this up by creating a lot of texture. The pink makes the painting look soft and adds to the sweetness of this dog's overall expression.

Here you can see how the paint is slowly build up to create more and more texture, making the portrait look lively. If you like to learn more about ordering a similar portrait click below.

A German Shepherd Portrait in Black and White

I received a custom order request for a German Shepherd portrait painted in black and white. I am a huge one of monochrome paintings and did series of them a long time ago. So this request was a very welcome one. However i snug in some color just to punch it up in a very sneaky way.

This was a small painting and I did it while working in between larger scale paintings. If you like to order a similar portrait click below for more information.

Shih Tzu Portrait - Dog by a Window

There are times when I start with a photo reference and end up surprised how well a very ordinary space turns out in the finished painting. The little lap dog loves to gaze out a window and although it is a side view, highlights were added to to face to make the dog look more lively.

By creating a painterly background the window and the dog come to the forefront and keep our attention there. If you like to learn more about how to order a similar portrait click below.

Minimalistic Cat Portrait

It's funny how everyone has a favorite look. Some like me to paint their pets in very elaborate landscape  settings and others opt for a very minimalistic look. I was told that this cat loved a certain spot in the house. She would lie on top of a wall niche and just gaze down at what was happening below.

The face of the cat was in deep shade and there is a lot of yellow gray shading in the original reference photo. I decided  to use texture and color to punch up the painting and I hope that it will be a hit with my client. If you like to have your pet painted click below for more information.

Cocker Spaniel Custom Painted Portrait

My client wanted me to paint this Cocker Spaniel who  has passed on by a front door, where it loved to sit. I made a few changes to the backdrop to make it look more painterly and really plaid up the flower pot in the front.

The close-up shots show the brushwork and loose, painterly handling of this pet portrait. If you like to learn more word order a similar portrait click below.
